Typedef's Next Chapter: We're Joining Factory

We have some big news, and we couldn't be more excited to finally share it: Factory has acquired Typedef!

Nearly three years ago, we set out to fundamentally rethink how data teams build and operate software in a world powered by AI. Today, we're taking that vision to an entirely new level, joining forces with a team that shares our ambition to redefine the future of engineering.

We get to keep doing what we love most. Building.

It started with a big idea

When we founded Typedef, we had a pretty ambitious belief: AI wasn't just going to make data engineers more productive. It was going to fundamentally change the way data engineering gets done.

We weren't interested in simply making existing workflows a little faster. We wanted to rethink the entire data development lifecycle, from how data is transformed and modeled to how complex systems are understood, maintained, and evolved.

That ambition took us on an incredible journey. We built new technology, open-sourced Fenic, worked alongside brilliant data teams, and continually pushed the boundaries of what AI could accomplish in real-world data environments.

Along the way, one conviction became increasingly clear: the leap from AI assistance to true autonomy requires something much deeper than generating code. It requires context.

Enterprise data is the DNA of a company. Its business logic, institutional knowledge, and competitive advantage are woven into thousands of interconnected systems. An AI agent might be able to write a beautiful SQL query, but if it doesn't understand which pipelines, models, and dashboards depend on it, you're potentially just automating your way to a very expensive incident.

We believed that giving agents a deep understanding of these relationships was essential to unlocking the next generation of data engineering. That belief became central to what we built at Typedef.

When two visions collide

When we met the team at Factory, something immediately clicked.

We had been approaching the same future from different directions. Factory was reimagining the software development lifecycle through autonomous engineering agents, while we were building the data context necessary for those agents to understand and operate within complex enterprise data environments.

It felt like finding the other half of a puzzle, two peas in a pod.

Factory brings an incredible agent harness and platform for autonomous engineering. Typedef brings a deep understanding of the data systems that power modern enterprises. Together, we have an opportunity to unlock an entirely new level of engineering automation.

But great technology alone isn't enough. The people you're building with matter just as much (if not more!)

This is where Factory really stood out.

We found a team with the same relentless curiosity, high agency, low ego, and bias toward action that we've always valued at Typedef. People who would rather build something than spend three weeks debating whether it should be built.

It felt like such a natural fit for our entire team.

The people who made it happen

Looking back on the last three years, it's incredible how much we've accomplished with a small, determined team and a few AI agents. We ate a lot of pastries (thank you Bakhaus), drank some wine, raced go-karts, and enjoyed Tahoe's beauty. But mostly, we built and built and built some more.

Startup life has a funny way of keeping you humble. Some days felt like we were chewed up and spit out. Other days felt like we hit the game winning shot, with the entire crowd chanting our names. We found ways to stay motivated and have fun with it.

And through all of it, one thing remained constant: we kept building.

And we couldn't be prouder of the team that made it all happen.

The creativity, technical depth, relentless determination, and sheer amount of heart that went into building Typedef have been extraordinary. The team also put up with a few sudden change of directions, dearly coined in startup lingo as "pivots". What this team accomplished, and the way we accomplished it, is something we'll always be proud of.

To our investors and advisors who believed in us from the beginning, our customers and design partners who trusted us with their toughest problems, and the countless engineers and data leaders who shared their ideas, feedback, and time with us: thank you.

Honesty, every single one of conversations we had in the field made us more energized and kept us believing that we were onto something.

You've all played a part in shaping what Typedef became, and we're incredibly grateful to have had you along for the ride.

A bigger canvas, the same ambition

What's most exciting about this acquisition is that the mission we started with isn't going away. It's getting bigger.

We've always believed that AI will fundamentally reshape how engineering gets done. At Factory, we now have an incredible opportunity to help make that future a reality, alongside a team that's just as obsessed with building it as we are.

We're bringing everything we've learned, everything we've built, and the same founder mentality that got us here. Only now, we're setting our sights even higher.

An acquisition might look like a finish line from the outside. For us, it feels like we've just stepped up to an entirely new starting line, with more horsepower, bigger ambitions, and an incredible team alongside us.

We're immensely proud of what we've built at Typedef. And even more excited about what we're going to build next.
